Michael Salsbury is a husband, father, retired international investment banking executive, endurance junkie, and avid ultramarathon runner. He and his family live in Santa Barbara, California.
A remarkable story of a couple that begins with
contrasting childhoods, one of poverty and lack, the other, sadness and neglect. A chance love story. A Caribbean romance. A Sound of Music Austrian wedding, to world travels as an international banker. It was the perfect fairytale newlywed life neither expected, but nothing could have prepared Salsbury and his wife Gabriella for what was to come.
This story that follows takes readers on a decade-long deep-dive into an unimaginable world of grief that surrounded the loss of not one - but three of the Salsbury's young children to an unknown, undiagnosed and fatal disease. Years later, scientific detective work across the globe eventually yielded answers that would hold global implications, both for science and the Salsbury family.
Thanks in part to their daughter's invaluable contribution to science, a discovery was made decades earlier than expected. The new disease was identified and named, and prenatal testing became available worldwide. Once again, defying unfathomable odds, The Salsbury family were the first reciepients of the new prenatal test.
And in the most serindipidious of events, not only were the Salsbury's the world's first reciepients of the prenatal test, they also welcomed the world's first birth of a healthy child as a result of the new test. A high energy boy that would change their family's lives and heal their souls.
Book Excerpt — "The final hurrah. All three of our children living miracles who defied the odds, who were, let's face it, lucky. With Sebastian, science finally caught up to us. We never had the luxury before of knowing our odds going into the world of parenthood. It was, in the end, a non-negotiable proposition. Each of our six children
Each of our six children had a seventy-five percent chance of living and a twenty-five percent chance of dying. Three were lucky. Three were unlucky. And through it all Gabriella and I survived - alive and together - also a miracle.
